Perky Pig

Translucent ears and eager nose,
a friendly wants-to-know-you pose;
he likes a head-scratch. On his toes
he'll reach to say 'Hello'.

This very friendly, attention-seeking pig is a member of a kind of temporary petting zoo in the centre of Funchal, set up alongside a wonderful Christmas model (see Extras). The model places a traditional nativity scene amidst a Madeiran ethnic setting. Really lovely. Alongside the pig was a rather bewildered-looking, but seemingly happy, sheep, a sleepy rabbit and a hen in a pen with a loudly cock-a-doodle-dooing cockererel. I had to give the pig a head-scratch - it would have been rude not to!
