Burning the Clocks

Burning the Clocks is a community event on the 21st of December each year, that brings the whole city together to mark the shortest day of the year. Local people make their own paper and willow lanterns, then after parading through the city, they pass them into a blazing bonfire on Brighton beach, as a token of the year’s end, which is then followed by a firework display.

It's a celebration of the turning of the year but also a time for reflection and thought, who are we? Where have we been? Where are we going? What do we want for our City?

In the three years that we've lived here, this is the first time we've been to watch it due to the weather in previous years, but fortunately tonight it was dry and mild.  We chose a spec to watch at the start of the parade and we didn't stay to watch the fireworks, but I'm glad we've seen it.  I've added a photo to my extras which shows this character, who I assume is supposed to be Old Father Time, surrounded by the lanterns.  It was hard to decide between the two of them, which to blip, but I like how he's looking straight at me here.

Unfortunately my wheezy cough seems to be turning into the flu, I've not felt great today and tonight I have a headache, am achy and feel cold yet my face is burning.  Perfect time for Christmas, and tomorrow we're driving up North to family - I've not even packed or finished wrapping the presents!

The exciting news though is that due to all Alan's business travels, he benefits from the air miles and has tonight booked for us both to fly upper class to Dubai in March - I'm very excited as you can imagine!
Anyway, my electric blanket is on, so I'm off to bed in the hope that I can shake this off.  Good night x
