Gotcha!

Thanks to Sheldon Brown and a few bikey acquaintances.
Dismantled the freewheel and got a pair of Stilsons on the outside of the hub body, a few determined whacks with the hammer and it just came off.
Wheel still runs true so now I can upgrade the tandem to an eight speed compact double instead of the old 7 speed triple.
