We spent a few hours in York today before having a delicious meal with friends this evening.
Many of the buildings in the Shambles here were built between 1350 and 1475 and the street was mentioned in the Domesday book in 1086. In medieval times it was the street of the butchers and in front of the shops there were heavy shelves used for meat. These were called shammels from which the street takes its name and many shops still have the shelves and hooks for hanging the carcases.
