Sunrise over George Square
With only 10 days until the shortest day of the year, it was still quite dark after 8am this morning, but for about a minute the sky to the east was a fiery red. It faded quickly leaving streamers of mauve and pink above the chimneys of George Square. It was all a flash in the pan as the morning crept in grey, but mild.
Most of the windows in the Dower House face south which means the difference in the angle of the arc the sun makes between sunrise and sunset in summer and winter is very obvious.
Because the sun is low in the winter sky, it shines directly through all the windows and picks up every mote of dust lying on all surfaces, including the floor, while in summer it is much higher in the sky and falls at a much kinder angle, not reaching quite so far into the rooms. It is a pity that with no sun today, His Lordship's cleaning of the salient windows yesterday, has not produced the sparkling effect promised
