The Two Towers

Beat, Bridie and I went to Ringsted today and on our way home, I decided to stop by Fjenneslev Church to get a picture to blip.

Fjenneslev Church is an interesting church as it has 2 towers, which is very unusual for Danish Churches build at that time (1120).

It is one of the Hvide family's churches. The most famous member of the family was Absalon, archbishop and founder of Copenhagen - the capital of Denmark. The church is build by Absalon's parents Asser Rig and Fru Inge.

The legend says that Asser Rig's wife was pregnant when he went to war and he asked that if she gave birth to a daughter whilst he was away, she would build a spire on the church and if she had a son, she would build a tower, so when Asser returned from war, he could see from a far distance, whether he had a son or a daughter. Fru Inge had two sons: Absalon and Esbern Snare - therefor the two towers.

This legend can not be historical correct though - partly because the two sons were not twins, partly because the bricks used for the towers were not used in Denmark as early as in the 1120s. Fru Inge might have built the towers, but earliest when Asser died, and it is more probable that they were built toward 1200. Nice story though :-)

It has been cooler today - yipeeeee! I could train dogs and we loved it! Off for a walk soon...
