A king in Kings Lynn
Saw this while in Lynn today, a bronze statue of King John - I thought 'not seen that before' - googled it when I got home and found it is brand new ! Only unveiled in October on the 800th anniversary of King John's final visit to Kings Lynn - a visit which resulted in the crown jewels being lost in The Wash (the area of swamp and marsh - not the laundry!) and, a few days later, his death in October 1216. In 1204, when Lynn was one of the four top towns in England, King John had granted a special charter to the town giving the merchant guilds the ability to govern themselves.Kings Lynn was a member of the Hanseatic League - an alliance of merchant guilds in the Baltic and North European area from the mid 1300s to the 1800s.
