Grey and wet from the very first light - a blip from the woods, salvation from the dull dreich day.
Collected Prince and v pleased with the work I've had done, he now has a leisure battery - so power & lights in the back and a teensy bit of storage.
Had a mooch into Kendal*, and in these days of Kindle a browse in the Oxfam bookshop, so from Cumbrian Folk Tales I give you:
The Rock Climbers
In the years leading to the Great War two young men loved to test their skills with the very gentlemanly challenge of climbing Lakeland's finest cliffs. A fast and true friendship was formed on the rock faces of Scafell, Helvellyn and Gable - but as the continent grew dark Lord Kitchener pointed his finger & one of our climber's answered his call.
The other climber continued to venture into the high places, but as any climber knows, to solo the big walls, alone with the elements, is a dangerous calling.
One day late in the summer of 1917 he'd just fought his was to the top of a particularly testing ascent on the imposing Western Face of Scafell when descending via Hollow Stones who should he see but his dearest pal, obviously home on leave and out to test himself on the very same route. Hearty greetings were made, earnest embraces given and a plan formed to meet that evening in the Wasdale Head Inn and tell tall tales of adventures.
The soldier never arrived for that pint - a few days later news arrived that at the very hour of their meeting he'd fallen for his country at the Battle of Passchendaele.
I read this with a growing chill - a tall tale for some, but every mountaineer i know will tell you that at some point its a spiritual experience, I've written so often of seeing my own soul in the mountain, of knowing my loved ones climb higher with me - its easy to believe.
*Yes I was studiously avoiding my presentation. Let's all agree it was 'strategy time'.
