It will be so good . . .

. . . when it is finished! The major roadworks at Scotch Corner have been going on for so long that no one can remember how it used to be. Every time we arrive, from whichever direction, it has all changed and we have to try to find our way through a maze of cones to get to where we are heading. Sometimes we are turned away and sent another way completely. 

Scotch Corner is one of the best known junctions in the country, signed from way off. When I used to travel long distances, I was always pleased to see the place appear on signs. I might still have had a long way to go, but at least I was definitely on the way home. It is part of our regular route, whether we are heading to the North East, or South as today. 

For those who don’t know, it joins the A1 (North /South) with the A66 (East/West). The name comes from the fact that it is the point of divergence for traffic coming from London or other points on the A1 and heading towards eastern Scotland (via the A1) or heading towards western Scotland (via the A66). Of course the Romans were involved with creating the first junction here and there was even a Battle of Scotch Corner, but no time for details of this at the moment. It has always been an important staging post, with an inn, from the early days of travel.
   
We are down South for a few days, heading into London tomorrow. It is very warm and I think we crossed the A66 this morning before the winds arrived and it was closed to high-sided vehicles.
