At the End of His Tether
Felled trees are not just for Christmas. This one meeting its doom today was quickly transformed into sawdust, at least it's limbs and part of its trunk were. The remaining bit has been left standing, whether for good or not we will find out eventually, but the men have gone from the scene.
It has been the fashion in the Meadows to leave the trunks as ugly totem poles, obviously for ecological reasons rather than artistic ones.
Our favourite Nepalese waiter from Loudon's and Peter's Yard has just opened a café with his Irish wife in Abbeyhill, and His Lordship and I had the excitement of a bus journey to visit it this morning. Amongst all the greasy spoon cafés and small undistinguished shops, the Red Kite stands out as a tribute to clean lines and dramatic decor. The young pair have transformed a hitherto ugly Chinese Restaurant into an airy space overlooking a corner of Arthur's Seat .
It may be a gamble for them to open such a café away from their hitherto known leafy coffee drinking areas of Bruntsfield and Morningside, but we do hope that once its reputation is bandied abroad, the Red Kite will be a very successful venture in the heart of Abbeyhill.
As a start, let me tell you that we have given their scones a rating of 9/10 and the ambience 10/10.
I have added an image of part of the inside of the café
