Gladstone's here

Here is a close-up of part of the amazing Gladstone memorial in Coates Crescent, which shows William Ewart Gladstone in the uniform of a Privy Councillor. The monument was carved by James Pittendrigh McGillvray in 1917 and moved to Coates Crescent Gardens in 1955.

Gladstone was a very important and influential public figure in Victorian Britain. Born in 1809 in Liverpool into a merchant family, Gladstone became a Liberal party was Member of Parliament for Midlothian and served as Prime Minsiter for four terms, being appointed to the post on 1868, 1880, 1886, and 1892.

On a personal basis, Gladstone founded and oversaw a church foundation to help women caught in prostitution, spending a lot of time on this work. He was affectionately known as the 'Grand Old Man' by his many supporters and as 'God's Only Mistake' by his enemies, especially Benjamin Disraeli, the then leader of the Conservative Party.
