A chiming mechanism
This is a German Westminster chiming clock mechanism c1920 made by the well known firm of Junghams who were producing quality clocks at this time. I am working on it at the moment. The hammers are lifted by the pins on the pin wheel to strike the gongs in a set order. On the other side are the hammers that are lifted on the hour to strike a chord. It is fascinating, (for me anyway), to study the historical evolution of striking mechanisms. Most of them differ subtly in their functioning but produce the same results. Over generations, craftsmen find simpler solutions to complex functions and design levers that will do multiple operations rather then only one. Sometimes the elegance of the solution is quite beautiful. A treatise on the importance of horology to the evolution of all modern technology may follow on another day!
