Yousef

Today we left our desert camp and headed for Nizwa. On the way we stopped at a place where they are breeding Arabian oryx. Beautiful creatures. As it was a 4 day public holiday the town where we stopped to get the punctures fixed was very busy so we had a long wait. A lot of youngsters (male of course) were heading off in their vehicles for the dunes to play.

Before long we reached the tar road, stopping to look over at a date plantation and beyond it, the town of Birkat al Mouz, one of the old mud villages that had been part of the 1950's uprising against the sultan, who thought he'd annex their oil-rich lands before the Saudis did. Yet another small war in a distant land for the British to involve themselves in.

I love this picture of our lovely driver Yousef. He was such a nice man. I thought when I got home I'd be getting into the back of our car and expecting it to drive me off, as it is so easy to take things for granted.
