The Wisdom of Solomon

The Proverbs of Solomon in the Old Testament says in chapter 31, vv 6-7 - Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

Robert Burns paraphrased it thus: 
 
Gie him strong drink until he wink,
  That’s sinking in despair;
An’ liquor guid to fire his bluid,
  That’s prest wi’ grief and care:
There let him bouse, an’ deep carouse,
  Wi’ bumpers flowing o’er,
Till he forgets his loves or debts,
  An’ minds his griefs no more.
