What a North and South

Remember the song by Tommy Steele in1960?  " What a mouth, what a North and South". Well some of you might!
These wild Konik ponies don't mind the cold. They are a hardy lot and need to be when they stay outside all winter. This one was certainly showing off his teeth!
At Blacktoft Sands they graze on the wetland marshes, and their munching has helped create suitable habitat for everything from rare beetles to breeding birds.
Today was glorious. Blue sky and golden sun, but the lagoons were frozen, and there was a distinct lack of birds.
We did see a marsh harrier, some shell ducks, snipe, teal, and a solitary swan. However the highlight for us was a large flock of fieldfare feeding on the hawthorn berries. See extra.
Wrapped up well, we had a nice walk around the reserve, and then out along the fields to the river Ouse/Humber.
As usual, at this time of year, on the way home we called to see our " wood man" and filled the car with enough wood to last until January.
We should now be cosy and warm over Christmas.
Cold, frosty, sunny days are what I love in Winter.
