Water Protectors
Local activists are camping out tonight at the offices of the US Army Corps of Engineers, imploring the Corps NOT to evict water protectors. The flag is that of the Standing Rock Sioux people who were given the land on which they now stand in a treaty in 1873.
In related news, the height of hypocrisy: the North Dakota (right-wing) governor has ordered the evacuation of the Water Protectors camp, in his words to “protect” the people who have been camping there since the summer to stop the construction of a pipeline that threatens clean water supply for the region. This is the same governor who ordered his henchmen to deploy water cannons on the Water Protectors in below-freezing weather, who has sprayed the people with pepper spray, who has set upon them with riot police.
The rain let up and we actually had an hour or two of sunshine as people arrived for the camp-out.
