There is a power in a union
A day in Sunny Bristol! Started with a walk around the docks while C got up and did whatever it is that takes so long in the morning. Bought a few records in Vinyl Relics. The real entertainment there was the proprietor selling a record player to a 30-something man who didn't know anything about record players except that he wanted one. Dansette-type record players were on offer from £150 - £250! They seller was exposing the differences in terms of increasing quality - this one has two speakers and is more powerful... judging those things in terms of quality was surely beside the point? Upstairs they had some more modern gear at cheaper prices - a Thorens deck. And, in a bit of a Proustian rush, I saw my first ever record deck. A B&O Beogram 1500. This had an integrated (low-powered) amp. I bought mine for £100 after working for the local factory for four weeks at £40 a week. I can't remember what happened to it... I could have bought one, minus, cartridge, for £20. I was really tempted. But it would have taken up space. And stylii (?) cost £150 a pop!
Met up with C and looked around a bit more - had a hot lunch in an Italian cafe in St Nick's Market - very good!
In the evening, it was a walk up to Clifton to my old Student Union building to see Agnes Obel. We had a nice pizza and White Rabbit beer at the White Rabbit pub next door.
The gig was great. The four musicians made an incredibly full sound - more aggressive-sounding than the records. They were using looping on the Cellos. Very effective.
We nearly had our first Uber ride home. But, because of high demand at this time, it was going to cost £25. We walked.
