Gnarly
Just staggered in from a mega day out well hunting in the backhills behind Bandon -all very obscure but I was accompanied by two enthusiastic and tolerant well hunters (see extra). First we fuelled ourselves with coffee in Budds and had a catch up with R & F then off we went. Five wells bagged, hair tangled in the undergrowth, avoiding a poor dead badger, accosting innocent passers-by, rummaging around in bogginess and marvelling at little offerings till left in the vicinity: a headless madonna, a pink rosary, and plastic cup. The well above, for that's what it is, the water emerging around the roots of the old tree, is called Tobar na Fearna - well of the alder trees. Two trees remained but I think one of them might have been a beech, and the other possibly an alder. They had been left alone in a field - this one with magnificent gnarly roots.
The extra shows the discovery of Lady's Well - not visited for a considerable time I suspect and to be found at a foot of a cliff amongst masses of brambles, brackens and nettles. Here are the two trusty helpers lifting up an old door to reveal the well below, protected by some rusty corrugated metal. The headless madonna was layer spotted just behind Hannah. This one good for curing sore eyes apparently.
Himself has captured a fine moment - actually a rather remarkable well complete with engraved stones which of course had to be investigated.
Thanks to serpent for hosting DS for November, next month evolybab is taking over.
