A very special find
A beautiful crisp, cold, sunny morning and in the shaded areas the frost remained all day. Wrapped up warmly L and I took Togbe up to New Lanark where we enjoyed a lovely walk along by the river.
I spotted this white stuff and thought at first it was snow that had been trapped on the shaded side of the branch. On closer inspection I realised that it wasn't snow. We spotted the growth in two separate areas but in both places the growth was on a fallen branch.
I did a Google search when I came home and I think it's called Hair Ice. Hair ice, caused by a fungus, is a type of ice that forms on dead, rotting wood and takes the shape of fine, silky hair. The ice sometimes forms into hairy clouds that look like candy floss. The growths that we saw were both on the side of the path where there was no sun so the wonderful ice sculpture just didn't melt. A special find.
The extra is ice on the top of a wooden bench .... glad I wasn't needing a seat!
