A Piece of History
My Raggedy Ann Blanket
by Mira Monroe
My Raggedy Ann blanket was made by my Great Aunt Norma. She made it for my grandmother when my Uncle Alan was born.
When my Great Aunt Norma died of cancer, my grandmother couldn't even bear to use it, but she wanted to keep it safe so she tucked it away in a cedar chest.
When I was about six or seven, I got sick. My grandmother felt bad and she knew I liked Raggedy Ann, so she found her old cedar chest and opened it up. Next thing I knew, my grandmother was walking over with a blanket. She got to my house and showed it to me. On the front of it, it was yellow with embroidery of baby blocks and hearts and in the middle is Raggedy Ann and Andy standing together with yarn hair.
At first I didn't really like it but I gave it a chance and snuggled with it. Now my Raggedy Ann blanket is my best friend. If I had a bad day I came home to cry with it. If I was sick I cuddled with it. I can't stand being without it.
As I grew taller and taller the blanket couldn't cover my feet anymore but I still love it as much as any kid who got something new, like a toy, and after all these years it is still in great condition.
Now, to explain...
Mira is our granddaughter. Norma is my older sister who died 35 years ago of colon cancer. She was also a quilter. This one is hand made and hand quilted. Alan is our youngest son who is 37 now.
