Little Green Men
"Kunst i offentlig rom (KORO) (Art in a public space) commissioned the Korean artist Do Ho Suh to do a piece inspired by the phrase "Grass roots".
It was finalised in July 2012 and consists of 50,000 statues of men, women and children. The statues are made of bronze and the largest of them stands at a whopping 10cm tall!!! There were some 500 different models used and they are reproduced in differing sizes, "planted" outside the government quarter in the city center.
They are intended to signify diversity, solidarity, but also that the authorities are there to serve the people.
The piece was commissioned prior to the terror attack on Oslo and Utøya on the 22nd July 2011, however the piece seems all the more pertinent now than prior to the attack.
It is a subtle but striking piece and a great addition to the city´s streetscape. Well worth a look if you happen to be in town.
