U-Bahn München: 80/100 Richard-Strauss-Straße
Munich Underground: 80/100 Richard-Strauss-Straße
The next chapter of my strictly alphabetical Munich underground series comes only two days after the last entry: today's blip features Richard-Strauss-Straße underground station. The station was opened in October 1988, together with the other stations of the U4's eastern extension.
However, it does not share many design features of these stations (almost none actually). Richard-Strauss-Straße is one of only four station (of altogether exactly 100) with side platforms, the others being Garching-Hochbrück, Nordfriedhof, and Olympia-Einkaufzentrum (U1). The platform walls are revetted with granite; together with the wide and poorly lit tracks and ceiling the station has a rather dark feel.
The station as the street above are named after Richard Strauss, a leading German composer of the Romantic and early modern eras, who was born in Munich.
In the close vicinity of the station are the Hypo-Hochhaus and Effnerplatz with the sculpture Mae West.
