“On 1 July 1916 19,240 British Empire servicemen were killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. By the end of the battle on 18 November 1916 127,751 were dead in one of the bloodiest battles in human history.
Shrouds of the Somme – hand-stitched shrouded figures from artist Rob Heard will be laid out to represent the 19,240 killed on the first day of the Somme.”

An incredibly moving experience, with the accompanying voice of a young solider (far right of the photo) reading out the roll call of those 19,240 men, one by one by one…
My Grandfather was one of the lucky ones, he was shot at the Somme, but survived and returned home…
