Battery Stairs, Newcastle Quayside
Today, Mr YellowBalloon and myself went for a walk with our good friends Mr & Mrs RobinDown
We started off at Dunston and walked by The Staithes and followed the river into Newcastle where we crossed over Swing Bridge. After a delicious lunch we popped into The Side Gallery which has recently reopened after a revamp. There was a really good exhibition on called 'Childhoods 1977 to 2016' - some very moving pictures.
These steps are in an alleyway beside the Gallery. Apparently they don't really lead anywhere but end abruptly at a dead end. The name Battery Stairs comes from the Half Moon Battery, part of the Castle that was demolished and replaced by crowded tenements in the 17th century.
As you can see it looks as though the stairs have been very well used over many years.
Very enjoyable day!
