With this ring ....

Plumbing today ... fitting thermostatic valves to the upstairs radiators.  

Of course - it did involve a trip to Screwfix* to buy the 'special tool' I was missing - the large allen key like widget is a radiator tail spanner - needed to remove the old tails as they were not the same size as the new valves.

All done now - and not as difficult as I expected - only one minor leak, there was minimal cursing and almost no swearing involved :-)

Part two of the job - next week -  involves a new thermostat, smart controller, and a couple more TRVs on the radiators downstairs.   Given that we have no mains gas here, and use LPG for the heating, it shouldn't be difficult to save the cost of the various bits and pieces.  

We also now have a bedroom which is cooler than the rest of the house and a lounge which is warmer - which might get me into Gill's good books - result!

* Saturday morning in Screwfix handy hint .... use their mobile phone app, and arrive at the counter with the correct part numbers, and with your account bar-code key-fob ready - the staff will thank you for being organised. 
Extra hint - buy some Aldi work wear trousers with knee pads and allow them to become a little scruffy,  other customers will assume you really do know what you are doing :-)
