Restoration
The Hamilton Kerr Institute in Whittlesford is the University's art restoration unit. They clean up paintings both for the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Department of History of Art but they also do a great deal of work for private collections and other museums as an extra income stream. Because of this, I wasn't allowed to take photos of the works inside, but it was amazing to see how the colours become so much more vibrant as the muck of ages is cleaned away, often making for a very sharp line of division across the painting.
Sadly, that's about it for my museum experience. It's been an eye-opening three weeks but normal life had to reassert itself at some point...
