Union Canal
This is the Union Canal just east of Linlithgow. Originally called the Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal, it was constructed in 1818-22 to link the Forth and Clyde Canal with central Edinburgh. Its original purpose was to transport coal, but when that shifted to rail the canal became disused. It has been renovated as a leisure resource, with the connection to the Forth and Clyde Canal remade with the Falkirk Wheel. As the photograph shows, the canal is also a significant wildlife resource, supporting a wealth of flora and fauna.
