In Lyne Kirk...

November is the season of Remembrance.    In the Church, the festivals of All Saints (1st November) and All Souls (2nd November).    Then, for the children and all those who like fireworks, "Remember, remember the 5th of November, gunpowder, treason and plot."   Although we still seem to be hearing not dissimilar political thoughts more than 400 years on.

On the 11th, Remembrance Day.  Remembering all those who have died in war - salutary to remember that innocents die in war every day still.

I'm thinking now of the well-known poem by Christina Rossetti (1830-94).  She speaks of how it is to remember loved ones lost.

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you planned:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
