Old Wives Tales

There is an old wives tale saying that if trees have lots of berries, it will be a hard winter. Last year the trees were weighed down with berries and it was a mild winter, this year not so many berries. Does this mean that it is going to be a really mild winter or just that the black bird has been to visit the tree already?
