Plot Toffee

Our last morning in Norfolk so we headed into Norwich before returning home.

First stop was the magnificent Norman cathedral which is also the last resting place of Edith Cavell. A woman dressed as an old style nurse was showing a school party around so I suppose it was meant to be her. What really caught my eye was this wonderful shiny font and the lady cleaning it.

It was donated by the Mackintosh confectionary company when the company was taken over by Rowntree and moved north and was actually a cauldron for making toffee in. The base is the lid. You can see the arches and vaulting of the roof reflected in it. Unfortunately you can see me too as well as the lovely cleaning lady and her cleaning materials. She cleans it once a week. Perfect for the season (Gunpowder) plot toffee.

Unfortunately it started to rain whilst we had coffee in the refectory, an excellent modern building incorporating some of the most ancient cathedral walls. Not complaining as it was the first rain we have had and it didn't last long. After a quick look we decided not to go into the castle but headed to the Royal Arcade, Art Nouveau in style and the market beyond.

There were some excellent 'helpers' around the city centre and one suggested we walked up The Lanes to look at the Catholic cathedral. A much more recent building built in traditional English style. The Lanes consist of independent shops but there are plaques in the pavement telling you what used to stand there. Sadly quite a lot of the buildings used to be pubs but are no more but lots of crafts and professions were represented too.

We returned to,the car through the cathedral close and along the river (Wensum) and saw more Egyptian geese, must be common down here.

Lovely sunset illuminating the clouds on the way home but we also had the inevitable Friday hold ups on the road for no apparent reason!

Home now and the heating is cranked up.
