Nick Nairn Cook School

I went to a 'Quick Cook' class at the new Nick Nairn Cook School on Back Wynd today. I booked in to The Ultimate Burger Class with my mum to give it a go and it was great!

The class cost £39 each and lasted 2 hours. There are a variety of different classes at different prices including full day sessions (we went for the cheapest one for our first go).

The kitchen bar was very smart and well designed with each person allocated their own cooking station. The chef was very helpful and friendly, but most importantly the final dish was delicious. It was a large steak mince burger (seasoned with cumin, paprika, mustard, ketchup and shallot) and roasted rosemary potato wedges served with smoked paprika mayo, cucumber pickle and a simple salad.

At first I was a bit annoyed when I realised we weren't making the mayo or pickle ourselves and that the chef was just demonstrating it to us (and it was just mayo from a jar not from scratch). But by the end of the class it was clear we didn't have enough time to fit it in, as so much work went into simply making and cooking the burger.

When we had finished cooking we had 20 minutes at the end to sit on the other side of the bar and eat our huge meal with a glass of wine. My plate was practically licked clean. So all in all I thought it was a very enjoyable experience. The quick classes are at great times for fitting in during a lunch break or after work and the upstairs studio for the full day classes is stunning- huge arched windows looking out onto the church.

So if you fancy expanding your cooking repertoire, doing something a bit different for a birthday (the full day classes are popular with hen parties) or would just like a relaxed way of meeting new people I would definitely recommend it. A 5 star dining (and cooking) experience.
