But, then again . . . . .

The Sluice Gate.

Down in Roslin Glen, there is a rectangular pit known as a bleaching pit; there used to be another which has long since been filled in; they were part of the “Henry Widnell and Stewart Ltd.” Carpet Factory that was on this site. Presumably they were used to bleach the yarns prior to them being dyed. The Blip is of the surface manifestation of the sluice gate that was used to empty the second pit and it was on Sunday night that some yoofs decided to use it as a barbecue, resulting in the wooden structure at the back being heavily charred and some of the metalwork  acquiring a coating of tar.

The out-flow from the sluice emptied directly into the River Esk which would have been heavily polluted from the paper mills up-stream in Penicuik, pollution that would have been significantly augmented on its journey to the Forth Estuary at Musselburgh. During my residence in Roslin, there have been problems with at least one accidental discharge from Dalmore paper mill that's half way between Roslin and Penicuik; I only know about that incident because I bumped into a pair of river authority inspectors while I was out dog walking;  I thought at the time that it was somewhat irresponsible of the inspectors to not put up warning notices since the river was, and is, a favourite playground for both dogs and children.

Dalmore Mill, the last of the paper mills, finally closed twelve years ago to become a housing development that is, only now, reaching completion.

I’m afraid I don’t know who is hosting Derelict Sunday this week, or if there is a theme.
