THE FLIPOT...

...is a wedge-shaped sliver of wood. When you get a straightish crack in the table of an instrument - first thing to do is to enlarge the crack with a wedge-shaped blade...

Then you prepare your flipot, slap glue into the enlarged crack, & hammer in the flipot, clean off the excess glue, let it set for a while - then slice it off with an extended Stanley knife.
