Gomantong Caves

Stopped on the way back to Sandakan Aitport to visit the Gomantong Caves where swiftlet nests are collected to sell to the Chinese to make birds nest soup.It is done twice a year at times after the young have hatched and fledged. The smell was horrible and the walkways and floor simply covered with cockroaches. I was very glad to escape into the sweltering heat of the surrounding forest.We arrived at the airport in another fierce storm but managed to catch an earlier than planned flight back to KK.
Extra is us on the way back across the river to pick up our transport in a blissfully air conditioned car.
