When Science and Maths collide

you get two very happy geeks!

Me and my friend, Michelle, went into Manchester to the Museum of Science and Industry to attend the "After school science club" event.  Have essentially had 3 hours of science, maths, a glass of wine and 4 really good talks.

The whole event was based on the theme of colour, so the talks covered such things as how the eye and the brain conspire to perceive colour; how mercury is linked to the colour vermillion and some groovy stuff to do with surface tension and lasers being used to translate into sound;  how rainbows are so much more than each of us realises (and that a rainbow that I see will be ever so slightly different from the same rainbow seen by a person stood next to me); how spreadsheets can be used to create images (yes, my geek warning bell went "ding, ding, ding!" at that one).

We have analysed our phones under a microscope to look at pixel arrangement, then done similar with £10 and £5 notes and seen that what appear to be lines are actually microscopic letters and numbers.  We've done some colouring in of megapixels which will result in the creation of a megapixel picture at MOSI.  We all were able to don aprons and contribute to painting the picture that you can see here.

It felt clandestine to be in the museum after it was closed to the public.

Loved it.  Will definitely be going to the next one.
