19th hole with a difference

Arriving at the clubhouse today, we found it decked out for a christening. In an effort to survive, in spite of rapidly dwindling membership and rising costs, the club is raising money with weddings and parties, but they are mostly held at the largely deserted ‘social’ side, with its big rooms, pergola, lawn, swimming pool and bar. Recently, there have been a few more casual parties and now musical evenings at the smaller and cosier golf pavilion, but christenings? Anyway, when we came in from golf, the party was in full swing and it was nice to see the club so full. Good news for Valerio, the caterer, too.

Spent far too long at the club discussing club politics with two of the most effective and proactive committee members. They give up many hours of their time in an effort to keep the club afloat, but some other members appear to be conspiring to close it down. Are all clubs like that?
