What is it - a cut, an alley or a ginnel?
Not a nice day day here today. I walked to the village in the rain and took a few photos, including this one, along the way.
I got me thinking - what people of different areas call alleyways. I'm in the North East and I would call something like this a cut, an alley or entry but I know different areas of the country might call it something else.
Once, when I was in Yorkshire, I stopped and asked for directions and was told to go up the snicket. I must have looked totally blank because then I was told 'You know the ginnel' which left me more confused.
Another old North East term could be a chare and I understand that in Edinburgh it might be called a close.
Well it's one way to fill in a dull, damp day and it did get me thinking.
