Peaceful
Stopped off at this idyllic place on our return to northern Minnesota.
It's Savanna Portage State Park in the Central Lakes region - an area that was used for centuries by the Dakota and Ojibwe indigenous peoples and then by fur traders who arrived in 1763.
These traders used to have to navigate their canoes through miles of narrow, sharp turns, then trudge through 1.5 miles of knee-deep, thick muck while carrying 150lb packs.
Not surprising, then, that they dreaded the place.
