Craven Lime Works
Walling just outside Settle today near Langcliffe. We were working in a wood, so no blip opportunities there. On the way home there is Craven Lime Works preserved by the council for visitors (interestingly it's not signed) The Craven Lime Company was formed in 1873 and on the site there are the remains of three different types of kiln. The best preserved is the Hoffman kiln which is now like a huge cavern with about 22 kilns in two rows. The site is very close to the Settle- Carlisle rail line and this is how the lime was transported. It is a fascinating site and worth a visit - if you can find it. You turn off the Settle to Horton - in- Ribblesdale road opposite a factory, under the railway and follow the track towards the now defunct Lancliffe quarry.
