Remembering Aberfan
Fifty years ago, as a ten year old, I arrived home to our flat from school, for my lunch to find my mum in front of the black and white television in tears. It was the day the Welsh mining village of Aberfan was engulfed by the coal slurry which flowed like an avalanche down the valley. 144 people died, 116 of them children, a whole generation wiped out in minutes whilst at lessons in their school, many of them my age.
Two years ago, we were in the area and visited the memorial garden which was built on the site of Pant Glas school.
Today, as the village remembers, our thoughts are with them.
