Curly doddies

Red and white clover are known as Curly Doddies on Orkney. Looked it up for spelling and discovered that the name is also applied in other areas to other common plants- scabious, ribwort plantain, daisies. Also in some areas it applies to curly headed bairns- but I've never heard it used that way- maybe in the Borders?
