A Charm of (Fussy) Goldfinches!
There has been a sudden huge increase in the consumption of the sunflower hearts from our bird feeders, by flocks of goldfinches. So, when I was in our local bird food shop in town, to stock up on more, I asked the very knowledgeable owner why this might be. He advised me that this is the time of the year when the goldfinches particularly like feeding on the seeds of the Greater Burdock plant which is abundant in the wild around here...however, they don't feed on it unless the seeds are dry. If it rains, then they much prefer to eat sunflower hearts, and as we've had persistent heavy showers here for quite some days now, that all makes sense. Such fussy eaters!
