George Town

We went into George Town (Penang's capital) on the bus today. First stop was little India, which was a bit shabby and not that great. We went to visit Pinang Peranakan Museum, which is a house of rich Chinese around 100 years ago. Reviews of the fort were bad so we gave that a miss.

On the way back I wanted to see another temple (this blip).
Wat Chayamangkalaram is a Siamese temple which was officially given its site by Queen Victoria in 1845.
The temple houses a 60m gold-plated statue of the reclining Buddha, Pra Buddhachaiya Mongkul - said to be one of the longest in the world. The reclining Buddha represents Pra Buddhachaiya Mongkul, the historical Buddha, at his death. This symbolizes complete peace and detachment from the world. One of the things that has amazed me is the amount of tat things that are sold in the temples (obviously to help you worship), as well as the accompanying stalls. To be honest the Burmese temple across the road was more serene and free of rubbish.
