Thieving………….
…………......Kaka
Backblip
Travelling from Wellington to Ormondville we spent several hours at Pukaha Mount Bruce.
The Kaka is a native parrot. They are cheeky, full of confidence and very entertaining. This bird swooped in at speed and helped itself to a large piece of my husband’s blueberry pie as it sat on a plate on an outside table at the cafe while we awaited the arrival of our savoury dishes.
Feeding the birds is not allowed, but one look at this beak and these claws and we weren’t arguing with it! I did manage to get some great photos though.
The Kea, a similar species to the Kaka is a larger bird with olive-green rather than olive-brown feathers and it is confined to the South Island of NZ.
The following statement was taken from their website “The Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre forest restoration project began in April 2001 with the aim of restoring the area of remnant indigenous forest. This project was undertaken in partnership with Pukaha, the Department of Conservation and Rangitane o Wairapa.
The key objective was to reduce animal pests and predators to levels where species reintroduced could occur, allowing them to become established and thrive within the Pukaha forest”
The Extra photo
Parents and cute wee ducklings which were near our accommodation at Te Awanga, Hawkes Bay.
UPDATE
This evening, someone with more knowledge of birds than I have has identified these as Grey Teal Ducks.
