Closing the Window for Winter
This is the low window in our bedroom. In summer it is single glazed and easy to open. But as winter approaches we turn it into a double glazed, and decorated, window.
The window is sealed with special white paper tape, thereby eliminating all draughts. A layer of moisture absorbing fluff is placed at the bottom of the window, though dry moss can also be used in the same way. Decorative dried flowers add a touch of elegance. Another pane of glass is placed on the inside of the frame and then also sealed with tape. And so we have a sealed double glazed unit.
In the days before modern double-glazing this was the traditional way to fix the windows so they worked well both in winter and summer. When done properly it is as efficient as a modern sealed unit window.
Today's extra shows a detail of the finished window.
