Placa/Stradun
The main street of Dubrovnik from the old city walls taken above the Pile Gate.
This is the same street that I photographed last night in the moonlight and is one of the first shots I took when we climbed up the city walls just before midday this morning. It was fabulous and as you can imagine I took many pictures on the 2 hours plus we spent up there. It was good not least because there was a breeze and today has been overcast but very humid - more than 70% humidity - so very warm.
You can also see here the different colours of the roof tiles. Old and yellowing on the left and many more brighter orange ones on the right as most of the rooves were destroyed in the Homeland wars and have had to be replaced.
The sea was quite choppy on the outer edge of the walls and very few boats were leaving the harbour compared with two days ago. There were one or two bars along the way with orange and pomegranate juice being freshly squeezed as well as the usual beers etc. A few arty shops too plus a lovely young lady selling traditional embroidered items and fish ceramics. They were much higher quality than the ubiquitous 'hand made' table cloths we have seen everywhere. Had to stop and look and purchase!
As well as the rooftop views it is great looking down into the gardens and terraces of the houses. People's washing and other items out on their balconies including in one case pots and pans drying and fruits and verges as well as pot plants.
Rain was forecast today, our first in the daytime, but we were nicely settled under an awning for lunch at 2.30pm when it came. It was quite light and intermittent and didn't seem to reduce the temperature.
We won't be going down for a promenade again tonight as I think storms are in the offing again but we go home tomorrow.
We walked part way this morning to Lapada and got the bus there. It took us along the shore and we came to a Cave bar. The cave was discovered when a hotel was being built so they have made it into a bar and restaurant. We sat and had a coffee on the terrace having looked around inside where there are stalactites and stalagmites. They have made a good job of it.
Have really enjoyed the walks today and Dubrovnik and Dalmatia are places I would happily return to. I will make a Flickr album when I get home if I can decide which of the hundreds of photos to use!
