Last light
at Workington
Just managed to get down for a wander before it got dark after spending the day looking out the window at the bright blue sunny sky outside. It was a beautiful evening ... calm and free. It reminded me of Wordsworth walking the beach at Calais with his 10 year old daughter, Caroline, who he was meeting for the first time after the war. I met a woman with her son of about the same age who rather cheekily shouted 'hello old woman' ... well, it is Workington and anyone over 15 is fair game when you're 10, but it spoilt the moment somewhat.
It is a Beauteous Evening, Calm and Free
It is a beauteous evening, calm and free,
The holy time is quiet as a Nun
Breathless with adoration; the broad sun
Is sinking down in its tranquility;
The gentleness of heaven broods o'er the Sea;
Listen! the mighty Being is awake,
And doth with his eternal motion make
A sound like thunder—everlastingly.
Dear child! dear Girl! that walkest with me here,
If thou appear untouched by solemn thought,
Thy nature is not therefore less divine:
Thou liest in Abraham's bosom all the year;
And worshipp'st at the Temple's inner shrine,
God being with thee when we know it not.
