Computers can be fun

Sorry for the delay in blips! Liam came down for the weekend from St Andrews so I was busy showing him around. I have updated the missed days now - starting here :)

Today was very hectic. After all the commotion on Friday, I still wasn’t entirely sure what to do about my first lab rotation (which was meant to start today). I ended up having meetings with three different supervisors, as well as a discussion with some of the people in the computer lab I was initially meant to be starting in. After a lot of thinking (and reading through lots of powerpoints and information to learn more about modelling) I have decided to stick with this lab, looking at how computer modelling can help us to predict the spread of plant diseases and therefore how we can successfully control and possibly eradicate them. It’s a really interesting topic, and my first couple of weeks are going to be spent learning the maths and playing around on all of the computer programmes. After watching Jonathan code for so long and thinking how difficult it looked, I never thought that I would be getting into similar things myself. I’m very excited to challenge myself and learn more about the topic though - hopefully the maths side won’t be too confusing!

I managed a lovely dinner with some of my college friends today (in the photo, plus Pete who left before this was taken) and we sat together and made lunch whilst discussing our days. Being back at university is such a fantastic atmosphere.
