Black dots mean holes in negative. The white marks in the extra photo are from dusty negative or/and due erosion of the paper. The circumstances in the battle fields are usually far from ideal.
It looks like the soldier is talking on mobile phone but he is not. You cannot see the left hand of soldier, the dark thing is not hand but something that the soldier is carrying on his shoulder.
