Tools of the Trade
I need to dust off my old teaching podium and soapbox (both custom made from former students). I was offered, and have accepted, a long-term subbing position teaching English at Oakland High School from January to June. I know, I know...call me crazy. I will be there anyway for another basketball season, so I figured, hey, why not? In the words of George Costanza on Seinfeld, "You wanna get nuts? Let's get nuts!"
I told the woman who cuts my hair about it today, and she said, "What? At your age you think you've got some more life lessons to learn?" Good point. But in the four days this fall I have subbed and guest spoken, I found that I really missed the classroom (well, I've known this for a long time). But now I will be there daily, and for two grueling months coaching basketball as well. But it's only for six months, and as my dad used to say, "You can stand on your head that long."
Hey, think of the stories I'll have at the end of this deal. If I'm able to speak coherently at the end of it all. I'll put the podium and soapbox to good use once again.
